Chouquettes

This was the second dessert i made during my first 2 months living in France (the first time was Tiramisu, my most -still is - favourite dessert of all time). One home-sick day, i was craving deeply of Kue Sus (Choux à la crème, profiterolles), a famous snack in Indonesia, which can be found easily anywhere anytime (yeah over there we consider it as snack). So i decided to make ones.

I got the recipe from the net, and surprisingly it worked very well and left me extremely satisfied! Had i failed making this dessert i would have never been my own self today: a girl who cooks everyday. Because shortly after that, i begun browsing the net, searching for more recipes to discover and to expand more. I was so amazed on how practical the net is as a tool to learn cooking.

I had always been the girl who loves to cook back home but in the country where everything is "automatic", there is always someone who prepares food for you, and in the past time, dine out could be cheaper than cooking your own. Furthermore, i was feeling a bit insecured during my first months of staying in France, thus I let my husband prepared dinners and desserts, which made him the chef of the cuisine that period. After winning the "Grand prix of choux à la crème", i regained my self-confidence and took over the kitchen. Well, to make the story short: I owe Kue Sus big time!

And then my husband's silly wife discovered that .. actually, Kue Sus is not that difficult to be found in France. I mean, this is the paradise country of dessert, and Kue Sus is one of the country's national desserts.

Anyway, this is chouquette, a cuter little sister of choux à la crème (add 1 small spoon of sugar to the normal choux pastry ingredients - dilute together with water, butter and salt - and then sprinkle sugar grains before putting the dough in the oven). I made this as a small dessert for my birthday boy, who turns thirty something today.
